Sadly the council insisted on imposing Pay & Display meters. However we did manage to keep no charge for an hour along the Brighton Road, with just half an hour in some side roads. I argued strongly last year that all local shopping centres should have a simple one hour free parking scheme, as there is in Banstead. It seems that the council has listened to a degree, as now Purley High Street and OLd Lodge Lane are to have charges cut to zero for the first half hour. That will give a boost to local shoppers. It has been a 15 year wait to get a chance to park in the town centre without having to pay.
