Original Message posted 5th Feb 2010 by Peter Morgan Coulsdon Roads & Traffic Consultant, Member of Coulsdon NP and of ECRA FREE ONSTREET PARKING COMES BACK TO PURLEY AT LASTAll last year, people in Coulsdon fought hard to keep our cherished one hour free parking.Sadly the council insisted on imposing Pay & Display meters. However we did manage to keep no charge for an hour along the Brighton Road, with just half an hour in some side roads. I argued strongly last year that all local shopping centres should have a simple one hour free parking scheme, as there is in Banstead. It seems that the council has listened to a degree, as now Purley High Street and OLd Lodge Lane are to have charges cut to zero for the first half hour. That will give a boost to local shoppers. It has been a 15 year wait to get a chance to park in the town centre without having to pay. Reply posted 10th Feb 2010 by Nigel Cooke common senseAt last a policy of common sense. Hopefully this will boost local business and help purley to prosperReply posted 12th Feb 2010 by Ben Stafford Free ParkingWhat's the benefit of free parking to traders as on the odd occasion I drive into Purley, there are precious few parking spaces to be had even with Charges?Reply posted 13th Feb 2010 by Peter Morgan More Parking needed in PurleyI agree there is too little parking onstreet in the town centre. In fairness, the council is proposing a few more bays. However their consultants proposed a 25% cut in overall parking. Rather than the current fancy plans, the Brighton Road should provide more parking Reply posted 26th Mar 2010 by David Osland Click here to reply to this blogDisplay - NOT Pay and DisplayPeter Morgan once again exaggerates the situation in Coulsdon. In the Brighton Road, it is NOT Pay and Display - it is just Display. The one hour parking is free, but a ticket is required to prevent abuse and give more drivers the opportunity to shop in the town. |
