EXHIBITION AND SALE OF PICTURES
The 36th annual Exhibition and Sale of pictures by local artists will be held at Sanderstead United Reformed Church Hall on Saturday, March 20th. Local artists from around Purley and south of the Borough will be exhibiting their work. Twenty percent of sales will go to The Childrens Society. The exhibition will be open from 10.00 am to 4.30pm.
There will also be a raffle and home made cakes and preserves.
ANNUAL CHARITY QUIZ NIGHT
Local shops, businesses and other groups will battle it out to see who has the highest general knowledge at the annual Purley Charity Quiz on Wednesday, April 21st at Purley Baptist Church at 7.30 pm. The deadline for applications (with booking fees I Friday, April 17th). A charity for a group that works in Thailand who help trafficked women get out of prostitution - they earn money by making jewellery, will benefit from the quiz this year. THE MAGIC OF MOZART AT ST BARNABUS
St Barnabus church are organizing a performance by Opera Nova of some of Mozarts Operas on Saturday March 27. The performance is to raise money to double the capacity of the church hall.See Events section for full details. WEAR IT NOT WASTE IT SHOW
Elisabeth Clugston reports: Purley Youth Project Juniors group, has been working with a local artist , Soraia Waterhouse, on a project about recycling and the destruction of the Rainforests and it's impact on our world.
With Soraia's help they have created clothes out of old newspapers and magazines. On the 10 March at 6pm in the Hall of the United Reformed Church, Brighton Road Purley, they will be modelling these clothes in what's called an Eco Fashion Show entitled "Wear it not Waste it".
We would love as many of your readers to come and join us. There is also an accompanying Art and Craft exhibition and refreshments will be served.
PURLEY LITERARY SOCIETY
'East Surrey Underground was the subject of an exhilarating talk by local geologist Peter Burgess to The Purley Literary Society on 2nd March. He explained, with photos, the history and use of mine workings around nearby Godstone to a well attended audience.
The next meeting, on 16 March, the last of the current session, will be the A.G.M. followed by an illustrated talk by Dennis Newland entitled 'On the River Zambezi in Zimbabwe'
