CHURCH RAISE a MILLION-POUNDS for COMMUNITY CENTRE AT CHRIST CHURCH
The building of the new Community Centre at Christ Church, Purley, is now ready to start next month. Members of the church have raised over one-million pounds in the last seven years to enable building to commence.
To celebrate, there is a Turf-Lifting Ceremony at the rear of the Church next Friday (26th) at 11.30am, followed by a reception with refreshments in the Hall.
The first turf will be lifted by Croydon South MP, Richard Ottaway, who will be aided by the longest serving member of the Church, Tony Bird. Tony started attending Christ Church in 1936 when he was 8, and in his first year at Christ Church school. The brief ceremony will be conducted by Christ Church Vicar, Rev. Charles Trefusis.
The Community Centre will cost £2.7m and will be undertaken in two phases as the balance needed is raised. The main feature will be a new showpiece Foyer, including a coffee bar, which will be open to everyone to drop in to meet and chat and attend events.

SWIMATHON raises OVER £20,000 for local CHARITIES and ORGANISATIONS
A record number of local organisations entered this year’s Purley Swimathon to raise money for the charity or organisation of their choice. Forty-eight teams entered teams of up to 10 swimmers in the annual event organised by Purley Rotary Club at Purley Pool over two days. Organisers estimate the swimmers covered around 70 miles.
Early indications are that the event will raise well over £20,000 pounds from sponsorship coming from the nearly 400 swimmers that took part. “The Swimathon is a great community event that has not only not raised over £300,000 pounds since it was first started, but is a fun event that is enjoyed by the hundreds of swimmers that take part,” commented Neville Thirtle, president of the Purley Rotary Club, “It is a good example of how Rotary works as a facilitator within the Purley community.” (Click here for more details)

PURLEY HEALTH CENTRE on WISH-LIST of NHS EXECUTIVE
Purley is one of three places in the Borough where local Chief Executive of NHS Croydon, Caroline Taylor, would like to see a GP-led Health Centre. The centre would open from 8am to 8pm. Other locations suggested are central Croydon and New Addington.
Previous NHS plans suggested that Mayday Hospital Accident & Emergency would in future only deal with patients not needing emergency treatment. Those with major trauma and hyper-acute stroke teams would be treated at St Georges Hospital in Tooting. Commenting on this Caroline Taylor said - It is not a case of how quickly you get to the hospital or medical centre, it is what happens when you get there.
One Purley resident disagrees with her opinion. See the Purley Village Blog section and send us your blog.
