WAITROSE ASK CUSTOMERS TO CHOOSE LOCAL GOOD CAUSES TO RECEIVE £1,000 A MONTH
Purley's nearest Waitrose Supermarket in Sanderstead has launched a 'Community Matters' scheme to support local good causes and asked customers to decide where the money is spent.
Each month the branch will donate £1,000 between three local good causes such as new goal posts for a youth club or redecorating an old people's home.
Customers can nominate good causes on forms available in the store.
At the checkout customers will receive a token and place it the box of the good cause they wish to support. The more tokens a cause gets, the bigger the donation they receive.

Local builders Milford Homes Ltd have been taken over by liquidators and a creditors meeting to be held on September 8 is expected to reveal large losses. Milford built the flats in the Brighton Road by Purley Hospital and gave £50,000 to improve the playground facilities in the Purley Rotary field, and also included affordable housing in the development, as a 'planning gain' payment.
Already there have been redundancies at the company, but a spokesman said that current building sites in Cullesden Road, Purley, and Birdhurst Avenue, South Croydon, would be completed.

CONTRIBUTION CANCELLATION BY TESCO
Tesco have cancelled the £3,500 a year contribution they have been making towards the cost of Purley Christmas lights. The contribution commenced when Tesco first announced they were planning to enlarge the Purley store. The contribution has allowed the Purley Business Association, who pay for the lights, to improve the Christmas lighting scheme in recent years. The Purley Tesco store has a turnover of over £50-million a year and has one of the the group's highest turnover ratings for its size.
One local trader commented: This is a typical cynical move that shows Tescos real attitude towards its local community."

PURLEY FOOD WASTE COLLECTION SCHEME BEATS TARGETS
The food waste collection scheme started by the Council in Purley some months ago has proved successful. Results released this week by the Council for the period to the end of March 2008, show 67.6 per cent of residents in the pilot area joined in the scheme. This is far more than the 40 per cent take-up in similar schemes around the country. Waste bosses found not only did more people took part, but they recycled more - 2.5kg per household compared to a typical 2kg of food waste each week.
Over 2,500 households were issued with containers for recycling leftover food and vegetable peelings.
In total, 207 tonnes of waste were collected - more than double Croydon Council's target of 100 tonnes.
