EXHIBITION of PURLEY IMPROVEMENT PLANS gets GENERAL APPROVAL and START DATE . . . .
Picture: There was overall approval by the steady stream of visitors who attended the exhibition of the Councils plans for improving the Purley street scene held last week-end. However, some representatives of local organisations who had attended consultation meetings were disappointed that suggestions made had not been incorporated in the scheme. One suggestion not taken up was that the bus stand used for parking buses during drivers rest periods and in the centre of the new Town Square area (above) should be moved. Other suggestions were that some artwork should be included and that the exit and entrance of the multi-storey car park be reversed to avoid car park exit traffic passing through the square. Neither suggestion is included in the scheme.
It is planned for work on the improvements to commence in October.

WOODCOTE GETS ENTRY SIGN but PURLEY WAS REFUSED . . . . . WHY?
Picture: This entry sign has recently been erected on the A2022 Little Woodcote Lane (by the garden centre) to inform motorists they are approaching Woodcote.
For several years Purley traders have argued that Purley should have better signage, including town entry signs on the four main roads leading into the town. It was planned for the signs to feature the town tree logo (right).
Last year Croydon Council agreed the scheme and allocated money for the Purley signage to be installed. Meetings were held with TfL (Transport for London) executives to establish exactly where the signs could be located on Brighton Road, Foxley Lane, Purley Way and Godstone Road. However, after a TfL Committee considered the proposal permission for the signs to be erected was refused. The plan was abandoned.
Now the new Woodcote sign has been erected local stakeholders are asking: Why was the Purley application refused? One Purley trader, a classic car restorer, commented: “People coming from a distance to see me, get to the far end of Purley Way and telephone to ask me where I am, and then don’t know when they get to Purley. The town is only identified by Tesco.”
